How To Prevent Hair Loss The Natural Way
How To Prevent Hair Loss The Natural Way
There seems to be a lot of work that has to consciously and necessarily need to be done
throughout one’s life in order to prevent hair from falling out. Some may argue that it’s natural,
and that losing hair is merely a part of age. Yes, the older you get,
the more likely it is for your hair to gain a tendency of dropping,
but that doesn’t really have to be the case.
The trick here is knowing how to care for your hair, and luckily for you,
I’m here to tell you just how.
It starts with the basics; hair care at its simplest is knowing how to properly clean your hair.
It goes without saying that it is mandatory to regularly wash your hair.
Of course, this is just standard, basic hygiene, but it’s important to understand that aside from
just cleaning your scalp, washing your hair reduces risk of infection that damages hair
and makes it drop. The important part of this is knowing what sort of shampoo to use.
Steer clear of strong shampoos, and stick to milder ones.
How can you tell which ones are mild and which ones are strong?
All you have to do is turn the bottle of shampoo around to check through the ingredients.
If you see things like sulfate or sulfonate listed in there, then don’t use it.
But if after the main ingredient listed (usually water), you see substances
like Glucoside or Isethionate, then that’s a product you want to be using.
And in addition to preventing hair fall, mild shampoos will even make your hair have more volume.
What about conditioner?
The best conditioners have ingredients like polyquaternium and silicone, so look out for those.
The next thing you’ll want to know about shampoo is how to choose theright type for your hair.
Think about whether you have dry or oily hair, thick or thin hair, coloured hair,
hair with dandruff, or just average normal hair, and buy products meant for it.
You can try out a few different shampoos just to see which one best suits you,
and once you find one that works, stick to it. But it’s important to look out for scams as well.
If you have damaged hair and are searching for products to match it, avoid buying “damage-repair” shampoos or conditioners that are enhanced by proteins.
This is because these protein products only give a temporary illusion of smooth,
volumised hair; they don’t actually repair any damage in the long-term.
Now, moving on from bath items, but still in the topic of general hair care,
let’s talk about combs and brushes. You may be thinking, what on earth does a
hair brush have to do with hair fall? Aren’t all brushes the same?
Well, firstly, the way you brush your hair can have a huge impact on the health of your hair,
and secondly, no, they’re not all the same!
You don’t want to go for hard, plastic brushes that you can get from any pharmacy.
Opt instead for a brush made from natural fibers that is soft and gentle for your strands.
You don’t want to use a brush when your hair is wet, though, so go for a comb instead after showers.
It’s also important to note that the best way to brush your hair is not from
the top of your scalp to the ends,
but from the underside of the hair towards the outside.
Massages are also a great way to prevent hair loss, as it causes blood to
flow better through the skin on your scalp, which in turn increases the absorption of nutrients.
You can choose to just rub your head with your hands to boost circulation,
but you could also spice it up by using oils for your massages.
A lot of oils have properties that help with hair growth.
To help you get started, here’s a bunch of helpful ones you can start out with: lavender oil,
rosemary oil, olive oil, coconut oil, geranium oil, and almond oil. But do note that the
only oils you can use on your scalp without diluting them first are herbal oils,
like the ones I’ve suggested. If you plan to use an essential oil, find out
how to dilute it with other oils first. If massages aren’t really your thing,
you can apply different natural items onto your hair, leave them overnight in a shower cap,
and wash them out in the morning.
You can do this with natural juices (orange juice, garlic juice, ginger juice, etc.)
or green tea (which only needs to be left in hair for one or two hours).
Whichever you prefer, it’s sure to have benefits for your hair,
even if it may feel a little odd at first.
Want to know a very natural, unavoidable factor that causes hair loss? It’s stress.
Stress is a truly awful thing; it not only tugs at your emotions and makes
you feel frustrated and grumpy, it also causes hair fall.
Even worse, you can’t completely annihilate stress from your life because it’s a standard part of it,
so you’ll have to learn to navigate around that.
Instead of striving to remove stress, strive instead to manage it.
Exercise, even just a little bit of it, can help as it releases endorphins,
which are feel-good hormones, throughout your body.
This allows you to relax. You could also try meditation or yoga,
and if you haven’t got time for either, then learn a few deep breathing exercises.
Deep breathing is an instant, automatic relaxant that can reduce stress by a tenfold.
Get on top of stress, and your hair will continue to flourish.
There are, of course, other factors that come into play with preventing hair loss,
like maintaining a good diet (which was discussed in a previous article),
noticing any increases in hair fall, and regular visits to a doctor.
Nonetheless, these are the simplest, most straightforward tips to
follow to ensure that your hair is cared for the natural way.
Follow these steps, and your hair will be sure to thank you.

The Hair Loss Fairy
The Hair Loss Fairy
Caroline was combing her hair in her room when her father walked in. Turning around to look at her father who was
carrying some books that he had just bought for her. She ran over excitedly to see the books that she had wanted so much.
“Papa, thank you very much. You are the best Papa in the whole world,” said Caroline while giving her father a big warm hug.
“If I don’t buy for you, then I’ll be the worst Papa in the whole world?” teased her father.
“No! You are the best!” reiterated Caroline again.
“Even if I don’t buy for you?” asked her father while looking at his little princess.
“You will buy for me because you are the best!” answered Caroline with a broad smile on her face.
Her father laughed out loudly. He had always cherish his little girl ever since his wife passed away years ago.
She is his world, his everything and his only meaning and joy in this world.
“Papa, since you buy books for me. I’ll do something for you in return.”
“What do you want to do for me, my little angel?”
“Sit down here. I’ll comb your hair for you. I’ll be your hair stylist.” Caroline imitated the action of a hair stylist.
“Thanks to you, my little princess.”
Caroline started combing her father’s hair when she noticed that there were bald patches on her father’s head.
“Papa, you have bald spots on your head.”
“Papa’s growing old. Losing hair / hair loss and going bald are something very common as one aged,” her father
answered in a relaxing manner as look doesn’t matter so much to him anymore.
“Can’t you do anything about it?” queried Caroline.
“It doesn’t matter.” her father replied.
“Why not? Don’t you want to look good?” Caroline asked again.
Her father slumped down in his chair. “So, Caroline wanted a good looking father. Caroline won’t love Papa
anymore if Papa having hair loss?” her father joked.
“No. No. I love Papa very much even if Papa has hair loss problem – not even one single hair!” said Caroline
with the innocence of a six-year-old.
Her father burst out laughing.
“But don’t you want to look good?” inquired Caroline.
“I think I already look good by having you,” her father smiled.
Caroline stopped for a while, pondered for a moment then continue, “I wish not to grow up so that Papa will never grow old.
How nice if we can be like this forever?”
“Time always move forward,” explained her father.
“But how nice if we can stop it here and now. If only we can choose…”
Her father answered, “Of course you can.”
“How?” asked Caroline with her eyes wide open.
“You can choose to be happy or to be sad. You have the choice. Choose to think of happy things.
Filled every moments with thoughts of happiness and you’ll be happy from moment to moment, day to day.” explained her father.
“So, Papa don’t mind even if Papa is going bald? With no more hair?”
“It’s okay. As long as you don’t mind,” her father replied while gently caressing Caroline’s face.
“Can’t we do anything about it?”
The father came out with a story to amuse his daughter, “We can seek the help of the hair loss fairy.”
“Hair loss fairy?” Caroline’s eyes widened with curiosity.
“Yes. Hair loss fairy. She will come and help you to keep your beautiful hair.”
“Really?”
“Really really,” her father smiled with amusement.
“Has Papa seek her help before?”
“No,” her father answered shortly while waiting for her daughter’s question as he knew that she enjoy reading
fairy tales stories and her whole mind were filled with imaginations.
“Why?” Caroline insisting for an answer.
“Because it doesn’t matter to me that much.”
“How to ask for her help?”
“If you are a good girl and behaves well, you can get to see her at midnight. Then you can wish for something and she’ll grant your wish.”
Caroline was determined to see the hair loss fairy as she wanted to help her father. Staying up whole night long
day after day but she didn’t managed to see the so-called hair loss fairy.
One morning, her father found her sobbing in her room, “Caroline, what’s the matter with you?”
“The hair loss fairy didn’t come. Is it because I’m not good enough?” asked Caroline with tears trickling down her eyes.
“Why? You wait for her?” asked the puzzled father.
“Yes. Night after night but I didn’t manage to see her.”
“Your hair growth is excellent and had became so long and beautiful. There’s no need for that.”
“I’m asking not for myself but for Papa,” clarified Caroline.
Then her father had to tell her that hair loss fairy doesn’t exist, it’s just a figment of his imaginations.
He just wanted to entertain his daughter.
“Papa, if the hair loss fairy doesn’t exist, I’m unable to help Papa.” said Caroline with a sad
expression on her face filled with dissapointment.
“Thank you, Caroline for what you have done for me,” her father beamed with happiness.
“I didn’t do anything. I can’t do anything.”
“Every little things that you do count as long as it comes from your heart. Nothing is ever too small.
The good intention that you have and your actions of staying up all night, waiting for the hair loss fairy to come are more than enough for me. You are my hair fairy.”
Telling stories to children as I used to be a kindergarten teacher in those days or even when
I volunteered as a teacher for a charity organization. Once, one of the children came up to me and
asked as to whether I had seen her tooth. She believed that if she placed her tooth under her pillow at night,
the tooth fairy would come and gave her money. Children are filled with wonder, curiosity and imaginations in their growing up stage.
“Don’t run or Mr.Floor will be in pain,” telling children as to be more careful when they walked.
“Be more gentle or else Mr.Plate will be hurt,”saying this as to teach the children to handle their food plates with care.
The principal told me about a teacher that used her own way to ask a boy to get up from lying down on the sofa as he wouldn’t budge.
She bent down and kissed the boy on his forehead while saying, “The princess had kissed the prince. The prince can now wake up.” The boy got up immediately.
Children will have their hair tied up nicely in different styles everyday. Looking at them reminded me of the time when I was their age.
They are my past. When I was small, my grandma will help me to tie up my hair before I go to school everyday.
Going to college then started working, life does change for me. I was no longer a child for now I’m an adult.
Working consume most of the time until sometimes, I just don’t have the time to do anything else. It’s a work, eat,
sleep cycle of life. At times,
working until one has no time to take care of one’s appearance.
So, you can figure that I’ll be looking like a zombie with dark circles under my eyes.
But one really need to stop, rest and relax. Life is not all about work. There’s more to it – family,
friends, goals, hopes and dreams. So, taking the time off to dress up nicely or style one’s hair.

The Best Food To Eat To Prevent Hair Loss
The Best Food To Eat To Prevent Hair Loss
So, you’ve heard all about hair fall, hair loss, and other hair-related horror stories.
Naturally, you would want to avoid facing these problems;
after all, no one looks forward to losing their hair.
That being said, not everyone has the time to actively use hair products or perform eccentric
rituals in order to guarantee that their hair won’t start falling out with age.
The good news is that you don’t need to take any difficult measures
to prevent hair loss; you just need to improve your lifestyle.
Here’s how.
The most important aspect of preventing hair loss starts with nutrition.
Eat a balanced diet, and your hair stays intact for a lot longer.
It’s pretty simple and logical: when your body is healthy, your hair is healthy too.
Here are the types of foods you need to be eating:
Iron
Iron deficiency can lead to many diseases if taken too far, but mainly,
a lack of sufficient iron intake can disrupt the condition of hair follicles.
Examples of iron-rich foods that you can incorporate into your diet are eggs, red meat,
green leafy vegetables, fish, dried fruits, whole grains, and beans.
Vitamin C
This links back to iron, because foods rich in vitamin C help your body to absorb iron better.
Thus, consuming sources of iron
and vitamin C at the same time is the perfect power combo. Some great sources of vitamin C are
vegetables and fruits,
especially citrus fruits like oranges, kiwi, and pineapple.
Protein.
This is arguably one of the most essential ingredients of strong hair. Don’t believe me?
Take a look at your shampoo bottle;
you’ll probably see amino acids listed in the ingredients, and amino acids come from protein.
Not only does protein prevent hair loss,
it also improves how your hair is in general.
You can get good doses of protein from seafood,
dairy products (like milk, cheese, and yogurt), poultry, lean meat, eggs, and nuts.
Zinc
Just like vitamin C to iron, zinc is extremely important to protein
because it helps to build proteins in the first place.
Without zinc, you may feel your scalp becoming irritated or itchy, which leads to hair loss later on.
You can get a healthy helping of zinc from seafood like cuttlefish and oyster,
or from whole grain products.
Omega-3
The fatty acids of Omega-3 protect hair from dryness by keeping the scalp hydrated.
Not only are they extremely important for hair health, the body is also incapable of producing on its own,
leading you to have no choice but to find a way to get your own source of it.
Luckily, Omega-3 isn’t too hard to find;
most seeds and nuts contain it, plus white, oily fish such as mackerel, sardines, and tuna.
There are also plenty of Omega-3 supplements sold in general pharmacies.
Biotin
Sounds unfamiliar? It’s a B-vitamin that helps to give your hair a brighter, more defined colour,
so it stops hair from turning grey too early. It also prevents hair brittleness and split ends,
and taking too little biotin just encourages hair to fall out faster.
Doesn’t sound like a good idea, right?
So make sure you eat enough biotin; it can be found in wheat products, whole grains, and egg.
Know what not to eat. Okay, so you’ve got this great list of foods that will help prevent hair loss
and guarantee you healthy and thick hair till the end of your life, but that isn’t going to be enough.
So don’t stock up on healthy food once a day and then gorge on fats, oils, and sweets for the rest of the time.
Stick to a good, balanced diet. Food additives and artificial sweetener are known to be a contributing factor to hair loss.
And don’t think you’ll be scot free if you go on a diet. A low-calorie diet based on liquids not only severely stops
you from gaining much needed energy, it also makes your hair drop out faster.
So the only way to go is really to eat healthy!

Strange Hair Loss Treatment Around The World
Hair loss is a condition that affects multiple people around the world. This condition does not discriminate and affects
many diverse countries. As such, specialists, doctors, and medicine experts in various countries have sought solutions to
hair loss for many years.
They have found various treatments, some veering towards the eccentric, that are believed to be effective methods of hair regrowth
and hair loss treatment.
Take Iraq, for example. In 2002, a study was conducted in Baghdad Teaching Hospital that discovered that onion juice was
an effective method in curing a particular non-scarring hair loss condition. Since then, people all around the world have
taken to slathering onion juice, onion-based hair masks, and even onion paste on their scalps in order to treat hair loss.
While this treatment is certainly extremely smelly, the pungent odour is well worth it, as this particular method has been
known to work well in terms of re-growing hair and preventing further hair loss. This is due to the high sulphur content in onions,
this treatment is able to clear bacteria on one’s scalp, thus allowing for better hair growth. However, it’s unknown whether
onions are able to help all types of hair loss conditions.
Ever heard of Monistat? It’s a form of yeast infection medication cream. Now, the last thing you would want to do with such medication
would be to apply it to your hair, right? Wrong! In the United States of America, this treatment is incredibly
well-known and is a go-to for many suffering hair loss symptoms. Due to its anti-fungal properties, this cream supposedly
has the ability to eliminate some of the receptors that cause hair loss, and this has even
been mentioned by doctors and medical professionals.
Doctors still heavily debate about Monistat’s effectiveness, although many results show that it does in fact
do great things for hair growth.
However, Monistat actually has a lot of side effects, including a sudden increase in hair loss if the treatment is stopped,
not to mention causing itchiness, splitting headaches and even burning sensations across the scalp.
Sure, you can give it a try if you like, but personally, this doesn’t seem to be much of a risk worth taking.
Meanwhile, in the United Kingdom, women suffering from thinning hair have found a rather odd and slightly stomach-turning way to treat the deterioration of their locks. An increasingly popular treatment for thinning hair in London is,
believe it or not, bull sperm. That’s right, Aberdeen Organic Bull Semen Treatments are known to
have restorative and repairing features, apparently due to it being a sort of protein treatment.
It’s also completely colourless and odourless,
thus having no noticeable off-putting qualities aside from the fact that it’s, well, bull ejaculate. Sadly, this treatment is not
very likely to cure any form of hair loss at all, and is thus (pardon my French), just a load of bull.
Let’s move over to Asia now. Asia is known for eccentric medicinal treatments, ranging from ginger to old herbs.
It’s a common idea that rubbing ginger root onto barren areas of the scalp may help hair to regrow, although this
has never been scientifically proven.
But more interestingly, a Japanese study drew a conclusion that the key ingredient in peppers and pepper oil, capsaicin,
is a good way to moderate and promote optimum hair growth. Sounds great, right? Well, the problem is,
this study experimented entirely on mice.
Yup, mice. Capsaicin was rubbed onto mice fur, not human hair. But when word spread about this seemingly miraculous cure
, it got a little bit mixed up, and no one seemed to notice that peppers might help mice grow their fur,
but it probably won’t do much for human hair.
Still, that hasn’t stopped people all around the world from spreading Tobasco, hot sauce, and cayenne peppers onto their scalps.
Sadly, this treatment isn’t so hot and it doesn’t do much apart from irritate the scalp, so it’s highly recommended that you
avoid trying this method out at home.
Yes, there are certainly many odd treatments for hair loss and hair regrowth across the globe,
and a lot of them don’t really have much of an effect.
That being said, there are still plenty of treatments that do in fact work, and work well: laser treatment,
prescribed medication, stem cell therapy,
and hair cloning being among the few most popular methods in use internationally this year. Naturally, though,
the abundance of proven hair regrowth methods aren’t going to be enough to stop the world from
trying its own strange personal treatments.
The world is, decidedly, a very odd place.

Hair Loss Confession Malaysia
Waking up early in the morning to greet another day as I was preparing myself for my daily routine.
Looking into the mirror and seeing a reflection of myself.
“ Mirror, mirror on the wall,
Who is the prettiest of us all?”
No. I wouldn’t ask such a thing. Mine isn’t a magic mirror after all. If it were, I’ll be asking for
numbers. My hair reaches below my shoulder, it would have been long if I wasn’t asked to get a hair
cut. I used to have my hair reaches down till my waist level, prized it as a lovely asset to me. At times, I
love to let go of my hair to be blown by the wind while closing my eyes to enjoy those moments of
silence all to myself. While working, I’ll be tying up my hair high up to give me confidence and I can
be more concentrated and focus in my work.
When it comes to combing my hair, I’m afraid of my hair getting thinner as my hair kept falling off
after I combed it. I’ll be finding them on my clothes, on the chair, on the floor and all over the house.
My friend has thin hair and is afraid of going bald. So, every now and then, for some – change the
shampoo and conditioner. Or even friends who recommend to you the products to counter against hair
loss. Whatever options that’s available on hand, one will try it out as most wouldn’t like the idea of
going bald due to hair loss.
Hair is a part of our image and also a part of the first impression that others have on us. It makes up
our personality and helps to boost our self-esteem. The way we dress, the way we look reflects our
personality. If you think that only women are more conscious and care about their hair. That is not the
case. In a 2005 European study, 62% men stated that hair loss would affect their self-esteem. Once, I
saw a motorist who parked his motorcycle by the side of the road, then took off his helmet. Looking at
the side mirror, he took out his comb from his pocket and start combing his hair. One thing to note was
that his head was almost bald. If I were to meet him face to face, I wouldn’t be commenting about his
hair as it may hurt his feelings. At times, we say that we understand. We know but we don’t understand
unless we are having the same experiences/feelings like the other person. Knowing is one thing,
understanding is another.
Of course, having a strong and healthy hair does wonders for us. Like magic. Everywhere we go,
people will be looking at you and giving you comments. Hair is one of the most common topic among
the others. Saying things like, “Your hair is very long.” or “How long have you kept your hair?” or
“You have thick hair.” and etc. The list goes on and on. One girl told me that she wouldn’t want to tie
up her hair after straightening it as she was afraid of lines on her long, beautiful hair. In Guinness
World of Records, there’s a woman who used her hair to pull the vehicle and another who has the
longest hair all the way down to the floor. She can compete against Rapunzel.
Watching movies/anime/fairy tales will at times let some of us wander in the world of imaginations
with all the prince charming, princess and happily ever after. Not forgetting those words by the girl,
“You are my prince charming, my hero, my warrior, my knight in shining armor, my one true love.”
And the guy,
“You are my princess, my world , my everything, my one and only.”
For those whose hearts were melt once they hear those words will sometimes soon found themselves
dressing and hair styling like their favourite characters.
For some people, they’ll be dyeing their hair like their favourite celebrities or their favourite
actor/actress. Or even during football fever, one will style one’s hair according to one’s favourite
footballers. Go! Go! Goal! Ole! Ole! Ole!
We can do whatever we want with our hair – cut, bleach, dye, perm, straighten or whatever that we
like according to our preferences and liking. That is if we don’t face the hair loss issue. At that time,
one wouldn’t be in the mood to style it rather finding ways to stop or reduce hair loss be it the
traditional or modern method as long as one can put an end to it.
Hair loss is not only an issue when one’s age is on the increase that one would be facing such a
problem. Even among the teenagers, such an issue already exists. Hair loss may be attributed to stress.
One of my ex-classmate was having white streaks of hair while still schooling, being the top in maths.
One should find ways to release the stress – to destress.
We all need motivation in our everyday life in one way or another. Having a strong and healthy hair
will be an added advantage for us to walk out, step up, meet and talk to people with more confidence.
Caring for our hair is totally essential in this day and age. Having a strong, healthy and beautiful hair
does wonders for our confidence and attitude towards life.
Be it long hair, short hair, straight hair, curly hair,
It’s our lovely treasure that we care,
Hair loss appear,
Sending us into a state of fear,
High and low, up and down,
Everywhere, we search around,
For a cure, for a stop, finding ways to counter it,
So, our hair will be strong and healthy,
With hope in our heart,
That will never be apart.
Dealing with hair loss is more about the quality of life, image, identity, personality and self-esteem.
It’s about doing our best so that we can be at our best and for us to live with dignity, self-respect and
joy.

Hair Growth and Hair Loss Treatment Malaysia ( Research )
Propecia/Finasteride
Propecia is a competitive inhibitor of type 25a-reductase and inhibits the conversion of testosterone to dihydrotestosterone.
The rationale for the use of finasteride to treat male-pattern hair loss is based on the absence of androgenetic alopecia in men with congenital deficiency of type 25a reductase activity and dihydrotestosterone levels in hair follicles of men with balding scalps.
Propecia rapidly lowers serum and scalp dihydrotestosterone levels by more than 60 percent. It has no affinity for the androgen receptor and therefore does not interfere
with the actions of testosterone , and it has no androgenic, estrogenic, progestational, or other
steroidal effects.
In three randomized, double-blind, placebo-con-
trolled studies, a total of 1879 men who were 18 to
41 years old with mild to moderately severe thin-
ning of the hair but not complete baldness received
oral finasteride at a dose of 1 mg per day or placebo
for one year.
Two of these studies enrolled a total
of 1553 men with loss of hair predominantly at the
vertex, and the third enrolled 326 men with predom-
inantly frontal hair loss. As compared with placebo,
finasteride significantly increased hair counts and im-
proved scalp coverage, as was evident in photographs
of both vertex and frontal regions.
Propecia In the men with hair loss at the vertex, the initial
treatment was continued for a second year, but some
men who received placebo for the first year were giv-
en finasteride and some who initially received finas-
teride were given placebo in the second year
In the second year, hair counts remained stable at
the increased level in the men who continued to re-
ceive finasteride. Hair counts decreased in the men
who were switched from finasteride to placebo after
one year, whereas the counts increased in those
switched from placebo to finasteride. There was a pro-
gressive increase in scalp coverage, as determined by
global photographs of the scalp, in 66 percent of the
finasteride group, as compared with 7 percent of
the placebo group, after two years.
The results indicate that the number of responding hairs is established after about one year and that continued treatment increases the length, diameter, and pigmentation of these hairs so that coverage of the scalp increases.
After two years of treatment with Propecia, about two thirds of men have improved scalp cover age, about one third have the same amount of hair as
they did at the outset, and about 1 percent lose hair.Since the miniaturization of follicles occurs over the course of many years, reversal of this process also takes
many years. With treatment for more than two years, the clinical impression is that scalp coverage continues to increase; five-year controlled studies are in prog-
ress to verify this impression. It is not known to what extent follicles will enlarge, and there is no way to identify the men who will have the best response.
In December 1997, 1-mg tablets of finasteride were approved by the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) for the treatment of androgenetic alopecia in
men. It is to be given once daily, with or without food. No dosage adjustments are needed on the basis of age or renal function. It is metabolized in the
liver and should be used with caution in men with abnormal liver function. In men who are 60 years of age or older, finasteride may not be an effective treat-
ment for male pattern hair loss
Minoxidil ( Rogaine Malaysia )
Minoxidil promotes hair growth when it has been affected by various conditions, including androgenetic alopecia. It increases the duration of anagen and
enlarges miniaturized and suboptimal follicles, irrespective of the underlying cause. For example, in addition to its effectiveness in patients with androgenetic alopecia,
minoxidil promotes hair growth in patients with alopecia areata, congenital hypotrichosis, and loose anagen syndrome. Minoxidil was developed to
treat hypertension, and this aspect of the drug’s action is the one that is best understood. It is a potassium channel opener and vasodilator. Its mechanism of action with respect to the stimulation of hair growth is not known, but it appears to be independent of vasodilatation.
The addition of minoxidil to cul-
tures of hair follicles increases survival.
A 2 percent solution of topical minoxidil was ap-
proved by the FDA in 1988 for promoting hair
growth in men with androgenetic alopecia. Its effica-
cy was established in a 12-month placebo-controlled
study of 2294 men who were 18 to 50 years old and
had mild-to-moderate thinning of the hair at the
vertex. Treatment with minoxidil significantly in-
creased hair counts.
Histologic studies con-
firmed that minoxidil increases the diameter of the
hair shaft.
In 1997, a 5 percent solution of topical minoxidil
was approved by the FDA as an over-the-counter treat-
ment for promoting hair growth. In a 48-week study
of twice-daily treatment with the 5 percent solution,
the 2 percent solution, or placebo in 393 men who
were 18 to 49 years old and had mild-to-moderate
thinning at the vertex, hair counts were 45 percent
higher among the 157 men in the group receiving
5 percent minoxidil than among the 158 men in the
group receiving 2 percent minoxidil and almost five
times as high as those among the 78 men in the pla-
cebo group.
The efficacy of drugs that stimulate hair growth
can also be assessed by clipping and weighing hair
grown in a small, marked area on the scalp.
This method was used in a 96-week double-blind study
of four groups of nine men with androgenetic alopecia.
Three groups received one of the following:
5 percent topical minoxidil, 2 percent topical minox-
idil, or placebo; the fourth group received no treat-
ment. Hair samples were taken from the frontal area
of the scalp. After 96 weeks, treatment was stopped
and the men were followed for 24 more weeks. Both
solutions of minoxidil were significantly superior (P<
0.05) to placebo or no treatment in promoting hair
growth and slowing hair loss, with the 5 percent so-
lution having the greater efficacy (Fig. 3); the placebo
and untreated groups had a steady decrease in hair
weight of about 6 percent per year. In the groups re-
ceiving minoxidil, the peak hair weight was followed
by a similar small decline during this period. Never-
theless, the hair weight in the minoxidil groups was
about 30 percent greater than that in the placebo
and untreated groups. The rapid loss of hair weight
after treatment with minoxidil was stopped (Fig. 3)
confirms its substantial growth-promoting effect.
Minoxidil initially causes a surge of growth in min-
iaturized hairs (Fig. 3). These hairs continue to have
a shortened growth cycle and fall out quickly, which
explains the temporary increase in shedding that pa-
tients may notice after 10 to 12 weeks of therapy.
One milliliter of minoxidil solution must be applied
twice daily to achieve and then maintain efficacy.
The solution is applied to the scalp and spread lightly
with a finger; massage is not needed. Spray applica-
tors are not recommended, because most of the so-
lution reaches the hair rather than the scalp. Men us-
ing minoxidil who wish to take finasteride should
continue to apply minoxidil for at least four months
after starting finasteride to prevent the loss of hair
that occurs after the cessation of minoxidil treatment
The combined use of minoxidil and finas-
teride has not been studied in humans, but in a study
in stumptail macaques the effect of minoxidil and fi-
nasteride combined was greater than the effect of
either drug alone.
The adverse effects of topical minoxidil are mainly
dermatologic. Irritation of the scalp, including dry-
ness, scaling, itching, and redness, occurs in approx-
imately 7 percent of patients who use the 2 percent
solution and in more of those who use the 5 percent
solution because of its higher content of propylene
glycol. Minoxidil or the formulated solution may also
cause allergic contact dermatitis or photoallergic con-
tact dermatitis.
With the 5 percent solution, the mean serum level of minoxidil is 1.2 ng per milliliter, well
below the level of 20.0 ng per milliliter at which
minimal hemodynamic changes in pulse rate and
blood pressure occur

FACT ON HAIR LOSS IN MEN AND WOMEN
Hair loss In Men
According to the American Hair Loss Association, about 85% of men will have significant hair thinning by the time they turn 50, and some men will even begin to lose hair as early as 21.
We think even just reading those figures could make you lose your hair! However, if you equip yourself with the facts, you can tackle this challenging phase of your life with confidence.
The key is to know what type of hair loss you’re experiencing, what’s causing it, and the different treatment options available to you.
Read on to learn more about hair loss and the different treatments available for hair regrowth for men.
Types of Hair Loss
Most men can expect to encounter one of these four types of hair loss at some point in their lives.
Involutional Alopecia
Involutional alopecia is the gradual thinning of the hair that occurs with age. It is a natural condition that happens as more and more hair follicles go into the telogen, or “resting” phase. In this phase, hair continues to get shorter with fewer hairs growing, and it becomes harder to regrow hair.
Androgenetic Alopecia
Androgenetic alopecia, also known as male pattern baldness, is a hereditary condition characterized by a receding hairline and gradual disappearance of the hair from the top of the scalp. This condition is responsible for the vast majority of hair loss in males. It can affect both men and women, but men can experience this type of hair loss as early as their teens or early 20’s.
Men who suffer from male pattern baldness have actually inherited hair follicles that have a genetic sensitivity to Dihydrotestosterone (DHT). DHT shortens the lifespan of the affected hair follicles, and eventually stops the production of new follicles.
Alopecia Areata
Alopecia areata is an autoimmune skin disease that results in hair loss on the scalp and elsewhere on the body. It occurs when your immune system mistakenly attacks hair follicles, which is where hair growth begins. It is not permanent, but experts do not know the cause of the attack on the hair follicles.
Patients and doctors usually begin to notice when clumps of hair fall out, which causes small, round patches of visible and exposed scalp on top of the head. In about 90% of people with this condition, the hair may return within a few years.
Telogen Effluvium
Telogen Effluvium is a temporary condition that develops when there is a change in the number of hair follicles growing hair. It is caused by a large number of hairs entering the Telogen or “resting” phase at the same time, which causes the hair follicles to become dormant, and subsequent shedding and thinning occurs.
Causes for Hair Loss
Now that you know the types of hair loss that can occur in males, it’s important to understand the causes, and if there are any preventative measures one can take to help minimize hair loss.
There are many causes for hair loss, but luckily, in most cases, hair regrowth for men is possible.
Medical Conditions
Medical conditions, such as thyroid disease, lupus, diabetes, iron deficiency, eating disorders, and anemia can all cause hair loss.
While hair loss is a normal response under these circumstances, it’s important to understand the effects of other medical conditions on the body. Once the underlying problem is treated, in many cases, the hair will return.
Diet
A balanced diet is key to good health. If the body isn’t getting enough essential vitamins, minerals, and nutrients, then the body’s organs, tissues, and cells may not be functioning properly.
Protein, iron, zinc and biotin deficiencies have all been linked to hair loss in men. In addition to deficiencies, having too much of certain nutrients, such as vitamin A or carotenes can also cause premature male pattern baldness.
Stress
Short-term, everyday stress, such as work or family life, is not going to cause your hair to fall out. A major life event though, or something that causes you to lose sleep at night or a change in appetite, could raise the level of stress hormones in your body. Hopefully this kind of stress will go away over time, and once it does, male hair growth will be possible again.
Hormones
Dihydrotestosterone (DHT) shortens the growth cycle of your hair and increases the resting phase. Overtime, hair begins to grow less and becomes shorter until it stops growing altogether. Unfortunately, genes can make certain hair follicles (usually in the front and crown of the head) especially sensitive to this hormone. Furthermore, excess levels of testosterone often result in higher levels of DHT and therefore an increase in hair loss or baldness.
Genes
More than 95% of male hair loss is due to male pattern baldness, which is genetic. Contrary to popular belief, this gene can come from either parent. Unfortunately this type of hair loss is impossible to prevent, but there are men’s hair growth treatments that, when used early enough in the hair loss process, can help counteract the genetic trait.
One of the most difficult parts of hair loss is knowing the right product or products to use to help treat it. Read on to learn the best treatment to use for the type of hair loss you have.
Treatments and Solutions for Hair Loss
Ask yourself: Are you looking for a long-term male hair growth treatment, or an everyday cosmetic solution?
Hair Regrowth
The treatment contains FDA-approved 5% Minoxidil ( Rogaine ), which is clinically proven to help regrow hair. Applied twice daily to the area of hair loss on the scalp, results can be seen as early as two months, but can sometimes take up to four. Continuous use of this product is needed in order to maintain hair regrowth.
Hair loss In Women
Although you may think that hair loss is strictly a male disease, you may be surprised to find that women make up 40% of hair loss sufferers.
Whether it’s sudden hair loss in women or gradual, most women suffer in silence, too upset or embarrassed to admit what they’re going through or to seek help. Instead they change their hairstyle or hair color in an effort to cover up the real issues at hand.
Types of Hair Loss
There are four main types of hair loss for women. Once you know the type of hair loss you have, it will become easier to treat and take care of your hair.
Androgenetic Alopecia
Androgenetic alopecia, or female pattern baldness, is the most common form of hair loss in women. Genes play a large role in this disease, and it can be passed on from either the mother or the father, and can start as early as the late teens.
Unlike males, who will lose hair in the crown of their hair or on the top of the scalp, female pattern baldness is characterized by widespread thinning on the scalp. The first sign of hair loss is often widening of the part or the ponytail becoming smaller.
Telogen Effluvium
When hair follicles in the anagen (growing) phase or catagen (resting) phase abnormally transition to the shedding (telogen) phase, it is known as telogen effluvium, and can cause sudden hair loss in women. It is usually brought on by a stressful event, and can incite handfuls of hair to fall out at a time.
The good news is that recovery is almost always possible with this type of hair loss in women.
Traction alopecia
This condition is caused by tight hairstyles that pull at hair over time and cause damage to the hair follicles. If the condition is detected early enough, the hair will grow back successfully. Braiding, cornrows, tight ponytails, extensions and weaves are the most common hairstyles that can contribute to traction alopecia.
Patients and doctors usually begin to notice when clumps of hair fall out, causing small, round patches of visible and exposed scalp on top of the head. In about 90% of people with this condition, the hair may return within a few years.
Now that you know the different types of hair loss that can occur in women, it’s important to understand the causes, and how you can prevent or postpone hair loss from happening.
Causes for Hair Loss
Knowing the different ways in which hair loss can affect you is just as important as knowing the different types of hair loss. By understanding what is causing the problem, you have a chance to stop or delay hair loss from happening.
Hormones
Androgenetic alopecia can be caused by a variety of factors tied to the actions of hormones, including, ovarian cysts, the taking of high androgen index birth control pills, pregnancy, and menopause. For pregnancy-related hair loss, hair will fall out immediately following birth, since little to no hair falls out during pregnancy. Then, after hormones stabilize, the hair will grow back.
Stress
Any kind of physical trauma, such as a car accident, severe illness, or surgery, can lead to hair falling out. When you experience a stressful event, it can shock the hair cycle, forcing hair to shed. This is part of telogen effluvium hair loss – when hair quickly goes from its resting phase to its shedding phase. Luckily, this type of hair loss will grow back once the stress stops, and can take anywhere from three to six months.
Diet
Not having a well-balanced diet can also cause hair loss, although only temporarily. Too much Vitamin A, either through supplements or medications can increase hair loss, as can a lack of protein in your diet.
These are natural remedies for hair loss, so make sure you’re eating enough fish, meat, and eggs, to assist with hair regrowth.
Treatments and Solutions for Hair Loss
Depending on whether you are looking for a long-term or short-term solution for hair loss, there are products for hair regrowth or for hair cover up that can help.
Hair Regrowth.
The treatment contains FDA-approved 2% Minoxidil ( ROGAINE WOMEN ), which is clinically proven to help regrow hair. Applied twice daily to the area of hair loss on the scalp, results can usually be seen in four months, but can sometimes take up to eight months to see generous hair regrowth. Continuous use of this product is needed in order to maintain hair regrowth.
Thin or Thinning Hair
If you want to cover up hair loss, but a permanent solution is either not what you’re looking for or is not working for you, there are still plenty of options available to you.
For thin or thinning hair, Toppik Hair Building Fibers is the ideal product to use. Made of natural, colored Keratin protein that is statically charged, Toppik Hair Building Fibers intertwine with your existing hair to create a completely natural look. Hair Building Fibers will stay in your hair through wind, rain, and perspiration, but will easily wash out with shampoo.
